The hands-on skills are complimented by an immense knowledge of the raw material, English Willow. The key to making any high-quality blademeans you need high quality raw materials the master bat maker will grade each cleft on natural weight, initial rebound performance of course, key aesthetic qualities will be considered such as grain clarity, straightness continuation from front to back as well as the presence of heartwood blemishes on the bat.
Once the bat maker has separated the clefts in to grades the cleft is pressed compressing the willow fibres to reach optimum rebound performance strength to withstand a cricket ball. This is a vital part of the bat making process as every bat will need a different amount of pressing to reach peak performance. After every pressing run the bat maker will test the rebound performance once they feel the bat cannot get any better the bat receives its final grading based on rebound performance before being shaped, fitted with a handle finishing touches applied.
